Throat Hit – Why Vapers Long For It
I have been a smoker for 10 years before I quit tobacco cigarettes and switched to non-tobacco battery powered cigarette. I remember clearly a certain situation when I refused to smoke when I really wanted to puff some cigarette due to stress at work. And the reason behind this is that the only cigarette offered in the tobacco shop was Marlboro Red (and some other non-Marlboro cigarettes). I’ve nothing against the brand actually. I’m a loyal customer of Marlboro when I was still smoking but I really didn’t like the red type because I find it too harsh and throat hit is very strong for me. I used to smoke the Gold or lights type because it’s smoother to take (I’m not promoting here or anything. It’s just my preference.) But now in vaping, I wonder why most of the users of electronic cigarettes look for brands or models that provides higher amount of throat hit.
Electronic cigarettes feel and act just like smoking tobacco cigarettes except for the combustion, tobacco, and tons of carcinogens. Throat hit or TH is the tingling sensation you feel at the back of your throat when smoking/vaping. But why would users like to feel some harshness and use throat hit as a gauge how good the electronic cigarette brand is?
Throat hit is a major concern in the world of e cigarettes, aside from the flavor and vapor production. The reason behind this is that naturally, they taste lighter than the traditional tobacco cigarettes since there is no tobacco burning involved. And most of the users who switched from tobacco smoking are used to stronger throat hit. Thus, most of the vapers think, the stronger the throat hit, it’s better and closer to the tobacco cigarettes.
There are several factors that determines the throat hit of your ecig. One of the main factors is the e-liquid or the liquid solution in your cartridge that turns to vapor when your electronic cigarette device activates. The quality of your e-liquid sets the quality of throat hit. In addition to this, the amount of nicotine you use in your e-liquid can affect greatly the intensity of throat hit production for your device. The higher the nicotine dosage, the stronger the throat hit. Also, the quality, model and brand of your vaping device plays a great contribution to good throat hit as well.
Aside from users choice of e-liquid and nicotine dosage, throat hit level depends on how the vapers use their device too. Getting more throat hit can be accounted to your vaping style or technique like how you draw on. Adapting to use e-cigarettes correctly is the first step in experiencing a satisfactory throat hit. Short, quick dragging of your electronic cigarettes will not give a satisfactory throat hit experience. To get great throat hit, dragging should be long (3-5 seconds) and slow. Also, with proper maintenance, you can stabilize the good throat hit production and long life of your device. Clogged atomizer and weak batteries can lead to weaker throat hit.
Throat hit for others can be the tool to measure your vaping satisfaction, but remember, it’s said that too much of everything is bad. When throat hit reaches the point where harshness is like scratching the flesh of your throat that you can’t even taste the flavor from the cartridge, then it’s not lethal to tone down and moderate your throat hit production. Why would you want to feel pain when you actually can choose to enjoy its usage right. Pain is not the feeling you look forward to switching to it. E-cigarettes promotes the advantage of providing a clean and comfortable alternative to conventional tobacco cigarettes.

I’ve been a “vaper” for only a few months now, am still exeperimenting, still learning. I think the term “throat hit” really has two components in my estimation. The first is the heaviness/fullness of the vapor. The second is what I would call “bite.” I like heavy vapor , but I do not like a strong bite. I think when people talk about TH they confuse/intermix these two aspects of the vape feeling on the the throat. I would like to see more differentiation of these TH aspects in the various discussions I see in the various forums.
