Electronic cigarettes have gained extensive media coverage across the world. Reports on television, newspapers, magazines and academic press focus on the current research being done on e-cigarettes, their legal status in various countries and their potential as an alternative to smoking.

- Tobacco Harm Reduction Unit: this is an independent research unit headed by two professors of public health and medicine (University of Alberta, School of Public Health). Their section on electronic cigarettes provides an excellent overview of their (and other academic) research on the e-cig.

- The following is a well-researched article from the New Scientist, titled Electronic cigarettes – a safe substitute?

- This pdf document is the result of a safety report done by Health New Zealand on the electronic cigarette. The researchers concluded that the “electronic cigarette is very safe in comparison to cigarettes and also safe in absolute terms”.
